Highly recommend and would not even consider drilling overhead without it.
Okay - the color doesn't matter because after the first hole the sheetrock dust sticks to the silicone and you can't see through it anyway. My method was to push the whole thing up against the ceiling and then peel back one side (like burping Tupperware) so I could line up my drill bit with my pilot hole. Once it was in, i let go of the bowl and drilled the hole. No fuss and no mess!
Multiple other reviews talk about adding a washer between your drill and the plastic bushing. I did exactly this and sprayed a little silicone lubricant on the washer and plastic bushing about every 5 holes drilled. I did not try even one hole without this setup.
I used it together with a 6.1" (155mm) hole saw for LED canless lights. I drilled 28 holes with it and it performed flawlessly. My ceiling was painted and lightly mudded 5/8" drywall in my garage.
So it is clear(ish) in its transparency. Turns out that this doesn't matter much. It is also rubbery in texture and flexibility. Essentially, it is a thick silicone bowl with a hole and plastic bushing at the bottom.
I don't often write reviews - but when I am blown away with a product's performance I feel its only right.
Very good product
Easy to use with my drill. Makes drilling holes in walls a clean venture...prevents dust from getting all over the place.
These work great believe it or not. I was very surprised with these! Will buy again!
They just used it and it actually holds a lot of concrete dust
So far, I have used this to cut out (16) 6.1" wholes in my ceiling and it is still working well. Great design....I would recommend this product
It’s clear enough to see what you’re doing. Even better, it’s soft and pliable enough that you could even turn it completely inside out to get the drill where you want, then turn it right side out to get it over the area to catch the dust. It collapses while drilling, all the while keeping the rim against the surface. Very happy with the way it keeps dust where it’s supposed to. I would recommend washing with soap and water if you’re having trouble seeing after cutting, first tapping out the dust into a trash bin.
The reviews were right, after you make your first cut you can barely see to make your next cut. My solution was to make a pilot hold for the drill bit first then circle it with a red marker. Then I could almost find the starter hold by feel and aided by the red mark. I sprayed a little WD40 on both sides of the red washer before starting to drill to cut down on the friction. Worked great for me. I would buy again and highly recommend.
Have only used for eight holes - some reviewers said they had issues with the center hole blowing out but no issues or sign of wear so far for me. If used commercially I’m sure it becomes a replaceable item but can see it lasting ~50 holes + easily
Well worth it to not have all the dust in your face. Flexible enough it does not get in your way. As in pictures it will get dirty so you cannot see through any more. Just predrill small holes for a guide.
As a contractor I have installed many of the new LED plug lights. Without a device like this you create a tremendous amount of dust and debris that must be cleaned up, but with this thing all the debris and dust are caught within the cup and there's very little cleanup. Two things that I will tell you about; first, is the fact that the inside does get coated with the dust and it is hard to distinguish where you want to drill your hole, so you must pull the lip down in order to see where you're starting point is. Secondly, you want to make sure that you put vaseline on the red lip that comes in contact with the drill chuck. This will ensure that the red bushing does not get ripped apart by your chuck. All in all it is a great product and I highly recommend it.
I tried to go cheap and use home-made dust guards made out of old Tupperware in the past. Big mistake. They didn't fit, broke, and threw dust all over the room. This seemed a bit pricey, but it's easily worth twice the price. The durability is outstanding, and it easily compresses against the ceiling while working to contain all the dust. I've used it on drywall and even on old plaster with metal screen and the results were excellent in all uses. In fact, it works so well that on the last job I didn't even clear the furniture out of the room before cutting the holes. Worked great.
I drilled in slow speed and was glad that no dust escaped. Now, for a tip that will be helpful for reducing dust coming through the hole in the bowl, the milk jug caps that snap on make a perfect washer to use on the bottom of the hole saw, on the inside of the bowl, just be sure to drill the hole in the cap just a tad smaller so it will fit snugly on the shank.
I just drilled 8 perfect holes for ceiling can lights. It took 15 minutes. Afterwards, there was zero drywall dust on me or the floor and after rinsing the bowl, it looks brand new (see photo). After each cut, I emptied the bowl and, following the advice of another reviewer, sprayed silicon lubricant on both sides of the gasket that rides on the hole saw's drive shaft. The bowl was perfectly stable while cutting, easily flexing upward as the saw cut through the drywall. IMO, the regular silicon spray helped immensely.
Purchased in January 2020. Plastic housing is clear enabling user to line up the drill bit for proper placement of hole. The ring on my Dust Bowl is red. Made modification to red plastic ring by gluing a metal washer to red plastic ring. Then prior to use I dab some light oil to the metal washer. Worked great. Have used it to cut holes in ceiling for electrical work. Almost no dust outside of bowl. Adding Metal washer was from a suggestion by another reviewer. I recommend this modification since friction on the plastic ring would possibly heat up the plastic and fail.
